A Broader Vision: The Value of Multidisciplinary Lenses

In 2016, SALIS partnered with the Association of Mental Health Librarians (AMHL) to present the first of what we hope will be many joint SALIS/AMHL conferences!
Presentations and posters covered a range of multidisciplinary subjects, including information literacy; novel psychoactive substances; peer support in mental health; social media; genetic and environmental influences on substance use and emotional health; open access and “predatory” journals; and local, national, and international perspectives on legalization of marijuana.
This year’s conference also included two workshops: AMHL presented on the Bridges Project, an online tool to help persons with serious mental illness find information about co-morbidities; and SALIS on the SALIS/Internet Archive Digitization (Digs) Project.
Speakers from both AMHL and SALIS were featured in the program. Invited local speakers included:
- Chrissie Hodges, Colorado Mental Health Institute at Fort Logan, discussing the value of peer support;
- Dana Abbey, University of Colorado Health Sciences Library, focusing on the search for evidence-based research;
- Ali Maffey & Elyse Contreras, Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, describing the impact of Colorado’s marijuana policies on public health; and
- Jeffrey Beall, University of Colorado, Denver, providing essential information for librarians about predatory open access journals.
